Search Advertising News from around the Web

Ad spend uptick; you might be using too many links; Yahoo’s innovation nation and more

Global ad spend shows signs of improvement
Good news for media buyers. According to Nielsenwire, while global ad spend is still down, the market looks ready for a turn-around. Phew! Meanwhile, Search Engine Watch offers even better news, reporting that ad search ad spend was up a brisk 10 percent in Q3. But not so fast, says Marketing Pilgrim’s Jordan McCollum.

SMX redux round-up
Miss out on Search Marketing Expo last week? FlyteBlog’s Nikki Hicks live-blogged just about every session, from analytics to SEO. Ah, bullet points—the next best thing to being there.

Too many links?
Remember that scene in “Amadeus,” when the king accuses Mozart of using “too many notes” in his music? Well, says Search Marketing Standard’s Rebecca Appleton, you might be using too many links, thus hurting your search position.

Yahoo! refuses to stop innovating
MediaPost takes an objective look at our next wave of search enhancements in this post by Laurie Sullivan. The article details several new Yahoo! innovations and initiatives for advertisers that address the big changes happening in the market now. Of course, we launched one of those innovations last week (see: Sponsored Ads in Filtered Search Results), but you can get ClickZ’s take on it here. For more Yahoo! innovations, see Product Pulse over at Yodel Andecdotal.

Five reasons corporations fail at social media
Blogger Jeremy Bryant offers up the five main reasons big companies just can’t hack social media. Here’s the short version: 1) Narcissism 2) Inaction 3) Stupidity 4) Fear 5) More stupidity. But you’ll want to read the whole post. It’s full of excellent tips. After all, says Bryant, “it’s not rocket surgery.”

Go ahead, yodel!
Yesterday Yahoo’s Buzz Marketing wing—yep, there really is one—launched the Yodel Studio, where your yodel can compete to win money for your favorite charity. For more, see Yodel Anecdotal, and enjoy these snaphots from the Times Square yodeling event on Yahoo’s Facebook page.  Need some inspiration? Write positively! Write “Yahoo! keeps on innovating like crazy!!!” not “Yahoo! refuses to stop innovating”.

Thanks for the tip collection, one can not stop learning in this world or will get stuck! I specially like the yahoo keeps innovating. If yahoo as a platform gets stuck all users in here will be stuck as well and will need to look somewhere else. Such a difficult field we are working at… always innovating and having to learn… but on the other hand it is exciting isn’t it?

I hope they are right and the market is indeed ready for a turnaround, because it would certainly be a positive sign for the economy as a whole, I think.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on Yahoo Search Marketing and their enterprise API… Both will be very useful and in no way is Yahoo out of the game, they are just going about things a different way. It will be interesting to see how their Bing deal will affect all of their search marketing tools.
