Your Ads, Richer
Yahoo! adds video, images and custom links to search ads
Ever since we launched pay-per-click advertising, the ads have looked more or less the same: A headline, a line of ad copy, a link. They haven’t changed because, frankly, the combination works pretty well. But what if search ads could show more?
With Yahoo!’s new Rich Ads in Search, they can. Yahoo! has been testing a new service that lets advertisers add video, images and custom search boxes to their search ads. The results are ads that can combine the relevance of search with the impact of rich media. A small group of advertisers tested it in the fourth quarter of 2008 and saw click-through rates rise by as much as 25 percent. They’ve also seen improved brand exposure and conversion rates.
What can rich ads do?
The Rich Ads in Search program is being shared with a small number of brand advertisers such as Pedigree and Esurance and agencies such as Razorfish. The program lets advertisers:
- Post images and video, which can increase the branding impact of search advertising. Pedigree has added video to its campaigns, for instance.
- Create deep links to relevant pages, which can help drive conversions directly from the Yahoo! search results page.
- Include boxes within the listing that lets users search for their desired product or a store location directly without additional navigation. Esurance’s listing lets users enter their ZIP codes from the results page for insurance quotes.
- Show their logo, which enhances user trust.
Rich Ads in Search is currently by invitation only to a small group of our brand advertisers, but we will update you as it opens up. In the meantime, start thinking of what your search ads could do for you.

Wow. This will suck..
2. Phil | February 19th, 2009 at 11:05 am
I can’t see this working.
3. marc | February 19th, 2009 at 11:32 am
I’m not as down on this as marK or phil but I wonder how you’ll be pricing this. Cost per Play (CPP)? or only upon click-thru. Will it be auction style? Why just big-brands? Let’s open it up to all the marketers who want to test it out with video. I can think of entire categories that would love it… Not sure how users will like it … if marK and phil are any indication, we have some challenges.

It’s about time. This is long overdue and I am not surprised that Yahoo is the one to make the first move.
5. Chad | February 19th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
No thank you, just more stuff to distract from the content. There is so many “new fangled” ads out there… this is just the flavor of the month. ill pass…

It’s nice to have such options for advertising. Sometimes our messages need more than just words and letters to make full impact.

Happy to see that yahoo is making new innovative move.
10. AjiNIMC (SEOforClients.com) | February 20th, 2009 at 12:56 am
Good experiment. I will see it working if
1) The videos can have call to actions with it. Because we will like to finish the conversation with some sales points.
2) Tracking ability for the videos.
3) PPT as a rich media (as it will be easy for us to create a new one and test it)
4) Few more suggestions but certainly worth the time.

Aji Issac

“Watch A Video and PEDIGREE® Will Donate Food To Animal Shelters!”
If this is the copy that was used during the test to determine success, it was a pretty stacked deck. It is difficult enough to demonstrate the value of new options to skeptical buyers. But when you add such a blatant attempt to get clicks without a more common business objective, it gets even more difficult. For Pedigree, this may be right on. For most others, it is not relevant.
New toys will often spur initially higher clicks, as a curiosity. Combine that with a plea to the heart (help animals), and I could hardly call this a representative effort.
Esurance seems more on target; provide zip code and jump into a quote. If you reak this out from the pack and let us know how it performed, there would be credibility there.

This is a nice step in a different direction. it is good to test new things and try things that haven’t been done before. Plus video marketing is such an important aspect of any business these days.

18. Z'da | February 24th, 2009 at 9:28 am
can we see a sample??? I’m positive that this will make online marketing rise to a higher level “:-)
19. Todd | February 24th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Being that my Business’ focus is video Production, this could definitely be a boon. Let’s hope the rates are reasonable.
20. Tim | February 24th, 2009 at 9:29 am
I’m looking forward to testing it when it’s available to the rest of us. I’ll let the metrics decide if I like it or not. If it works, it’s great. If it doesn’t, at least you tried.

As always, its all about momey!
22. Z'da | February 24th, 2009 at 9:35 am
An addition to my above post … never mind, I went to yahoo.com and entered, “pedigree” and saw the live video.
So COOL!!! The video is a bit oversized. I would consider making it smaller. I would also give advertisers the ability to embed an ‘email subscription’ form at the end of the video to capture emails of anyone interested in the offering.
So, what’s the cost? Pay Per VideoPlay, PPV???
Is Google offering the same? Does anyone know???
23. Identity theft expert | February 24th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Great idea, but why the tease? When will advertisers be able to use the product?
24. Zippy | February 24th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Cost?
25. Bob | February 24th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Fine, keep the cost the same as existing keywords accounts. At most, charge a nominal set-up fee. I’m sure it will become very popular and increase your advertisers and users, once they know of it!
26. Hunter Gatherer | February 24th, 2009 at 9:48 am
With the literacy rate dropping like the stock market, I won’t be surprised to see video taking over every possible message channel.
As a few of the above comments, I want to see the pricing structure before making any judgment to its value to my clients.
27. Jerry | February 24th, 2009 at 10:00 am
In response to the questions about pricing, I would imagine they will price it like Google does, PPM (i think) it goes by views, price per thousand views. fairly pricey also.
28. Richard | February 24th, 2009 at 10:07 am
If it isn’t too costly and it is easy to adapt pictures, videos and capture information—maybe. If you can offer some standard and stock videos for editing and use, maybe. Doing new copy and videos is costly.
29. The Great Rocky Santini F.W. LeMar | February 24th, 2009 at 10:08 am
The Big Secret is out already about putting videos on google to get High Rankings. This video trick is really for the Marketers who do not know what they are doing to make PPC work without paying Google Hundreds of Dollars over & over again. Google has made a fortune on these people & instead of them leaving Adwords altogether, Google came up with the video trick to keep these people around still paying Adword Bills. Yahoo is now doing the samething to fight back against Google. If Yahoo can keep their click prices down & at the same time increase new Click Buyers, then this video adding to Ads should be a good thing. But, if it is a ploy to bump up prices – forget it.
30. George Sitts | February 24th, 2009 at 10:17 am
This will be very interesting. This marks a paradigm shift in PPC, vastly expanding our options and thereby our challenges. I think we will look back on this period as the end of old, dull text-only days.
It will be interesting to see how these ads will affect the click ratio of our text-only ads, as well as discovering when they perform noticeably better than text-only.

32. Elizabeth | February 24th, 2009 at 10:28 am
It’s up to the advertising gurus to figure out how to make this cost effective and attract clients. Don’t think it will go away!
33. Brad | February 24th, 2009 at 10:37 am
I see it as a good platform for our <a href=”http://www.coralsupreme.com” title=”Coral Calcium” products and for other products where you can show a benefit with video or images. It think it will work well for some. It will take some testing to find out.

37. Gonzalo | February 24th, 2009 at 11:21 am
I think this is great! Being a media maker myself I think this new tool will open a new horizon amongst advertisers. More room to be creative. Online video is the future, and the future is now.
I wonder what will the cost be.
38. Tod | February 24th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Great Feature but I believe this feature was copied from todslist.
They were the first to offer Video Classifieds.
39. Michelle | February 24th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Pictures would be great! Video is not necessary for us. Price is a large consideration.
40. Yvette | February 24th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
I guess it would depend how it affects the price. Here is a Video Commercial we have on YouTube for our Online Dollar Store – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVj2z1Uz-DE would something like this work?
Also why is this program so concentrated, wouldn’t you get a better response with more small to mid-sized companies? Because they tend to give feedback whether you like it or NOT!
41. Mark | February 24th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Nice tool, but I think the cost is going to be out of reach for us smaller guys. If there was a smaller cost just for images that could make it more affordable. Remember, there are a lot of small businesses like mine out there who are strapped just by using PPC advertising.
42. Mark | February 24th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Also, how large of a video will be allowed? I have one on my website http://www.theultimatehomebusiness.net, that is rather long.
43. Adam Parikh | February 24th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
I can see images working for our office furniture businesses. I can see this working if advertisers vary their images.
BTW, please release an offline editor. Google has AdWords Editor, Microsoft has AdCenter Editor, Yahoo needs one as well.
The bulk uploads have improved greatly over the years, thanks for that.
44. Nick | February 24th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
This looks like it will be great! What would be absolutely ideal is to be able to have people enter their name and email directly in the ad so they can opt in to your mailing list right there.
45. Chris, PsychicDeals.com Marketing | February 24th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
One potential downside of this new look is that the still video image says, “In case you had any doubt, I’m an ADVERTISMENT!”
Without a still, a text ad says, “I’m a link to relevant information that you may want.”
46. Online Marketing & Web Design | February 24th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
great… is this now available?
47. Anna Natureday.com | February 24th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

48. Mbeinke | February 25th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Video Live by Yahoo was the bomb. Talk about a major blunder to end the service in dec 08. Having live video feed into a website for doing live demos is a money maker. Yahoo are you listening?
49. Paul the Cab Drivet. Price it too high, and it will blow our advertising budget.r | February 25th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Cannot WAIT to get this for my site! I can just imagine the impact. But the pricing needs to be right. Price it too high and it could blow my ad budget. Can we optionally drop the video from time to time in our ads to save money? can we have the video appear only linked to certain key words, or do all the key words have to have video? I WANT THIS NOW!
50. Denver SEO | February 26th, 2009 at 9:18 am
This will be interesting. Not sure if it will add to the users search experience, as I think it will make the search longer, but that’s great for Yahoo. More time on page = more clicks.
This was bound to happen. With videos and images being displayed in the natural results, why not in paid search? Congrats to Yahoo for being the first to roll this out.
I wish I could try this with my PPC ads ;0)
