Short Descriptions Coming

Modify Your Ads Now

As a frequent blog reader, you’ve probably already read that, come May, we will be requiring short descriptions (70 character or fewer) on all new or modified ads, whereas before this was merely an option. We’re doing this (to quote myself) because “we’ve found that ads written more concisely give users a better experience and perform better for advertisers. When users are exposed to higher quality search ads you, the advertiser, may attract more interested and enthusiastic potential customers.”

This is a little reminder on how you can modify your ads and add short descriptions. The basic procedure is:

  • Log into your account
  • Click the Campaigns tab
  • Click on a campaign containing the ad(s) you wish to modify
  • Select the specific ad group containing the ad(s) you wish to modify
  • Click on the Ads tab
  • Click on the name of the ad you wish to modify
  • Write a short description in the box indicated on the “Create Your Ad” page
  • Click “Save Changes”

Short (Description) Cuts
There is also an “edit” button in the Most Displayed Ad box on the Ad Group page, Clicking it will take you directly to that ad’s Create Your Ad page, where you may add a short description and make any other modifications you desire.

You can get to the ads in your top ad groups from your Dashboard by selecting “Top Ad Groups” from the drop-down menu above the bottom box, selecting an ad group and then clicking on the Ads tab.

What does “in May” mean? Please provide a date.

In fact, since the “live” deadline is really June… please provide that actual date too.

A question: Why is Verbatim allowed to display longer versions or short ads irregardless of placement and bid???

Please see the following example, ad copy today ( and everyday from this particular company) from the search page:

As you can see, it is clearly over the 70 characters that the rest of us are allowed to place in short ads. Why is this?

I am looking forward to your response. Also, if there is another contact address that I should be sending this inquiry to, please let me know.

    Robert,

This is an upcoming change that has not yet been implemented, so you will see ads that are longer than 70 characters for a while. We pre-announced it to give you time to prepare. We will be requiring short descriptions later this month but will not begin truncating until June. Stay tuned.

You may also contact Customer Solutions if you have more questions, (866) 924-6676.

[…] Last month we announced that, sometime this month, we would be requiring short descriptions on all new or modified Sponsored Search ads. Then, week before last, we reminded you that this change was coming. Yes, it was very thoughtful of us. […]

[…] Short descriptions (70 characters or fewer) have been required on all new or modified ads since May 16. Back then we told you that sometime in mid-June we’d begin cutting off ad descriptions longer than 70 characters sometime in mid-June. The date is now set at June 20. […]
