I am interested in knowing more about the following:
- More on having multiple accounts for different markets – I’m opening a UK and AU account.
- More on search term variations – plural, verb forms, spelling errors.
- More on click fraud – what’s the current status, what are you doing to stop it?
- Will you hunt down affiliates the way Google has done?
Kind regards,
Magnus Wester

I’d really like to see the option of geo-targeting from the U.S. to Europe and Asia without the need to setup a totally different account. Come on Yahoo, this option is available in MSN Adcenter for crying out loud.
My two cents, for now.

We’re still waiting for access to the Yahoo Panama API – any news?

Thanks for your questions.
Magnus Wester, of Stockholm, has several questions. (BTW: Stockholm is one of my favorite cities. I used to visit once in a while when I lived in Helsinki. When he’s not at his computer I hope Magnus is enjoying a coffee in Gamla Stan.) Magnus asks:
I am interested in knowing more about the following:
- More on having multiple accounts for different markets – I’m opening a UK and AU account.
The fact is that at present you’ll need separate accounts for different markets. Each of these accounts will be upgraded when the new Sponsored Search goes live in that market.
- More on search term variations – plural, verb forms, spelling errors.
There are two match types for Sponsored Search. The standard match type automatically matches an advertiser’s keywords to exact matches, singular/plural variations and common misspellings. There is more info in our Help section:http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/performance/customer/ss/match/
- More on click fraud – what’s the current status, what are you doing to stop it?
John Slade,Yahoo! Search Marketing’s Senior Director of Product Management recently addressed this question at length at: http://www.sausagemanifesto.com/the-sausage-manifesto/. The crux of it all is John’s statement: “We proactively identify suspicious clicks and remove them from our billing system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — as a result, we’ve given away billions of clicks for free. We’ve invested significant technological, financial and human resources in clickthrough protection since we started this industry in 1998 and are redoubling our efforts by dedicating even more resources to this issue.” We’ll be talking more about this issue in the future.
Matt O’Brien’s chief concern is similar to Magnus’ number one question:
I’d really like to see the option of geo-targeting from the U.S. to Europe and Asia without the need to setup a totally different account…
As I noted above: at present you’ll need separate accounts for different markets. Each of these accounts will be upgraded when the new Sponsored Search goes live in that market. Thanks everyone, for participating and we’ll get more answers to your questions soon.

Two things:
* Separate accounts for US and Canada, or at least a way to separate the traffic without having to geotarget by state. We cannot sell to Canada, yet we pay for thousands of Canadian clicks every month. Even in Panama this will not be easy to fix.
* Site exclusion. For any site, search or content. This has been covered in many different places and is a frequent advertiser request. It would also help Yahoo see who the low-quality are.

The reporting system is too rigid – do you have plans to make it more flexible, as in letting me specify view and field parameters, for instance that I want account performance summaries by month for the past six months, or keyword reports that include destination URLs, and keywords with no activity for the given time frame, etc?

Hi,
Trying to find a way to consolidate my many ad groups created when I converted into fewer ad groups. Yahoo “over helped” on this one as they tried break categories into ad groups and made many ad groups for me with a single keyword. I could find where I could move or copy ad groups to other campaigns, but not how I could move keywords into other ad groups.
Overall looks like the format of the new YSM will probably work well, but this is causing me a lot of work.

I have the same problem Bob. All of the easy tools that used to be there are gone. I absolutely hate Panama and would have stayed with the old platform if I could. The downloading of excel files to change Ad Groups and all the ID’s and components is no good. I hate it!!
11. Bob | January 10th, 2007 at 4:40 pm
Tell me it ain’t so Mike!!! So is that the only way to change ad groups? In my transistion they not only made many single word ad groupd that I would not have ever made, but lumped some unsimilar keywords (bald eagle sculptures and mountain lion sculptures into an ad group called bald eagles????). I have my sculptures spread all over in various ad groups called sculptures 0001 and 0002. So know I need to go through and find them all and add new keywords. Hardly seems worth it to do a csv download for one word???
I just converted/transitioned. I put it off as long as I could.
I guess you would call this a rant? But I sure thought it would have come across the transition without quite so much work. I am concerned that there is no concern dor the customer. Pushed out a change in the old format just before Christmas! Now setting up wierd ad groups that I need to change. Do you think they are still charging me?
as my dad used to say: “If things don’t get better pretty quick, I’ll have to ask you to quit helping me.”

Just a follow-up. Hope it helps some folks.
I got a call from YSM. Great service really. I wish I could remember the person’s name that called. She was great help. Maybe she will see this and respond.
Sooo, she tried to work me thrugh a spreadsheet upate, but my keywords came across so mixed up it would be a nightmare. I believe that a spredsheet update is available, but you need to change things like the ad group id, keyword id, etc, so it can get pretty complicated.
I will have to select and rename or create new ad groups I want to have in every campaign. Then I can download my campaign to a spreadsheet. Select the keywords I want for each ad group and paste them into the box in “Add Keywords”.
Extremely clunky and not very efficient. This process is easy for YSM, but a huge time sink for customers. We end up doing all the cleanup. (although, the YSM rep would have done some of this for me, if my keywords had not been so scattered.)
I would encourage advertisers to give YSM feedback every way possible to get this changed. I don’t think they realize the time it is taking to clean up the conversion issues.
YSM, please add a way to move keywords between ad groups that is more user friendly!!!

“YSM, please add a way to move keywords between ad groups that is more user friendly!!!”
I couldn’t have said it better Bob! You hit the nail on the head. I am amazed that they launched this thing without having that tool there. Panama is completely unefficient and non user friendly. They tried to take a Google approach, but didn’t come close to sniffing them and their userability. Google must be rolling on the ground laughing right now.
14. Bob | January 12th, 2007 at 8:00 am
YSM, Please turn off the cheesy note about increasing your ad group min bid when an ad group is moved. Sorts looks like you are grubbing for mor money. I think people can figure out from your tracking and grapgs if they need to increase their min spend.

We got several more comments and questions, over the last few days. I’ll try to answer each one that I can, as best I can.
Philip Wilkinson asks:
We’re still waiting for access to the Yahoo Panama API – any news?
Yes, Philip. In fact, we’ve just posted a blog entry about that under the title Third-Party Tools Update: http://www.ysmblog.com/blog/2007/01/12/third-party-tools-update/.
Melissa wants to know about:
Separate accounts for US and Canada, or at least a way to separate the traffic without having to geotarget by state. We cannot sell to Canada, yet we pay for thousands of Canadian clicks every month. Even in Panama this will not be easy to fix.
Actually, Melissa, you don’t need two separate accounts for that. All you need to do is go into the “Campaigns” tab > “Create Campaign” > “1. Enter Campaign Name and Geo-targeting.”
Then, after you’ve entered a campaign name, select the “Specific Regions” radio button and target by “State/Province/Territory.” This will open a dynamic map of North America. Check the box marked “States/Provinces/Territories within the U.S. and Canada” and then go in and un-click the Canadian provinces. These are the 13 Canadian provinces:
Alberta
British Columbia
Manitoba
New Brunswick
Newfoundland and Labrador
Northwest Territories
Nova Scotia
Nunavut Territory
Ontario
Prince Edward Island
Québec
Saskatchewan
Yukon Territory
Melissa would also like to see:
Site exclusion. For any site, search or content. This has been covered in many different places and is a frequent advertiser request. It would also help Yahoo see who the low-quality are.
Melissa is talking about is what we would call domain or URL blocking. And she’s right: We don’t have that feature yet. It is under consideration, however, and we will keep you posted.
